Last year, Maria Carrillo High School’s principal, Amy Wiese, was told she would not have her job for the following year, but due to our Pumas protesting at the district, she was able to come back.
In her own words, “That was amazing.”
Many students may question what Wiese’s job is like. According to Wiese, ”There is no such thing as a typical day for an administrator.” During the day, her current tasks can range from simply supervising the lunchline to attending meetings. These meetings can be at the district level, site level, or even supporting individual struggling students with her team. It is not uncommon for her to get hundreds of emails per day.
Generally this year has been harder because an administrator had to leave at the beginning of the year. This affects the rest of the admin team because they have all of the leftover work. For example, Wiese’s work day can be about 12 to 14 hours long.
Despite her busy schedule, she often goes to school events like concerts or sports games. She loves to see how Pumas perform every year. In fact, one of her regrets this year was missing the Mary Poppins musical due to a fever. In spite of this, she is looking forward to seeing the final school events.
Wiese is especially excited for this year's graduation, because two of her children are graduating seniors. Naturally this is a milestone for any family, and she will watch this milestone as both a principal and a parent.
As the year comes to an end she hopes for the Pumas to “feel like they belong here.” She loves seeing the MCHS community. Watching students be kind to each other is “the biggest gift to me.”
