Carrillo wrapped

Graphic including Carrillo’s most listened to artists (The Puma Prensa / Francisco Linares)

Students and teachers alike have a common ground, and that common ground is that none of us can get through a class without some music playing once in a while. Whether you're walking around with an Airpod in or playing music on one of the smart TVs to start your class, I can guarantee that you had a favorite song or artist this year. Spotify and other music services have released listeners’ individual favorites, but what about Carrillo as a whole?

Luckily, if you were curious about what your peers were listening to, we've got you covered. Carrillo listened to many genres this year, but the one that took the cake was the indie genre, coming in first with pop/R&B in a close second. The results for the most used streaming platform was a complete landslide with 77% of the vote going to Spotify, leaving Apple Music behind in the dust with a not-so-close 14% of the vote. Whether you were cleaning, crying, chilling, or just being lazy, these streaming services helped fuel your day. A majority of the school ranged from 10,000 to 50,000 minutes listening to music.

Now to the main event: who is Carrillo’s top artist? With absolutely not much shock to anybody, Carrillo’s top artist is Laufey, with Drake coming right behind her. Carrillo’s complete top five list is Laufey, Drake, Faye Webster, Playboi Carti, and last but not least, the one and only, Frank Ocean. The top album this year was “A Matter of Time" by Laufey. Laufey is an Icelandic Grammy Award winning artist who has been on the rise in popularity due to the rise of indie artists and music, and because she is quite the talented artist. She wasn't in the top 10 in any category this year, according to Spotify, but to Carrillo, she is still number one.

This year, Spotify added clubs to the wrapped and associated each user with one. The club Carrillo would've been associated with, based on Spotify’s breakdown, is the Cloud State Society, which means that we find peace in music, enjoy calm and atmospheric music for mindfulness. The genres of music that can be found in this category are blues, rock, indie, and pop.

Regardless of who you listened to this year, music is what keeps us all connected. You could make new friends due to music, and those new friends could introduce you to new sounds that you may have never heard. Music is a never ending rabbit hole, and that’s what is so great about it. The possibilities are endless.
